MFMI Learning Programs encourage trainers and academics to shape their own courses around needed knowledge on microfinance business models and management development frameworks.  The Learning Programs are organized as regional workshops, giving MFMI members the opportunity to share their experiences and challenges on microfinance training and academic programs.

The 2008 Schedule of Regional Learning Workshops:

  • A Training-of-Trainers workshop about Strategic Human Resources Management in MFIs, in Manila, Philippines, November 3 - 8, 2008

  • A Training-of-Trainers about Financial Risk Management in collaboration with Women's World Banking, December 2 - 5, 2008 in Pretoria, South Africa

  • A series of 90-minute Conference Calls using Skype.  The first was held on July 15, 2008, the next is scheduled for August 21.  See the News Section for a summary of the first meeting about "Training Program Management - Scheduling, Managing and Marketing Courses"

Skype conference calls are a new tool for network collaboration.  Download this file for guidance on how to use Skype.

  • A TOT about the ADDIE process, tentatively planned for October 6 - 8, 2008, in Nairobi, Kenya

See the News section of this website for updates.

Participation is still open in each.  If interested, please email your name, organization, and email contact address, and skype address to NGoronja@theMfmi.org.

Recent Regional Workshops

The MFMI hosted the fourth, fifth and sixth of its network meetings in Latin America (July 2007), Africa (August 2007) and Asia (January 2008) to bring its network together for south-south exchange and to offer Training-of-Trainer workshops.  These meetings brought together 55 different organizations.  The Latin America meeting was hosted by INCAE in Central America.  The Africa meeting was convened in Uganda around the All Africa Microfinance Conference.  The Asian meeting was hosted by the Asian Institute of Management, in the Philippines.

In late 2008 or early 2009 the MFMI is intending to organize another global meeting of the entire network.

The MFMI hosted its fourth and fifth network and skills-building meetings in the summer of 2007, in collaboration with two of its existing network members.  The meetings brought together 17 organizations from Latin America, as hosted by INCAE Business School in Costa Rica and another 15 African institutions during the same week of the African Microfinance Conference in Kampala, Uganda.  Reports from these meetings are available from the MFMI.

The MFMI's activities focus on the ability of trainers and academics to:

  • integrate microfinance practice with general principles and theories of organizational and management

  • understand that contextualization is key for both student and practitioner audiences

  • design and develop effective learning tools with keeping evaluation objectives in mind.
